Weigh In

The Homer Halibut Derby Headquarters is located on the Homer Spit in the center of fishing activity. It’s near the small boat harbor and the Spit Road. Headquarters is open Memorial Day weekend through Sept. 30. The hours are 5:30 am to 8:00 am and again 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm. During May and September headquarters may be open on weekends. Derby tickets can be purchased at many businesses on the spit and in Homer when headquarters is not open. Look for the small old log cabin with the big halibut out front. Tickets are sold and fish are weighed and checked in at Headquarters. All derby entry fish must be weighed in by 9 pm on the day caught. (See weigh-in rules)

Trophy fish that are not halibut can also be measured and registered for the state of Alaska trophy program and the International Game Fish Association at headquarters. Headquarters maintains a certified scale that is registered every year with the Alaska Division of Measurement Standards. All derby fish are weighed by our volunteer weighmasters and recorded on official registration forms. The official weighmasters determine exact weight on the certified scale and record it on the official registration forms. Our weighmasters have many years experience in the fishing industry and donate many hours each summer to the derby.

Derby Headquarters is also a visitor information center of the harbor area. Area guides, maps and business information are available. The coffee pot is always on and directions are freely given. An interesting inhabitant of headquarters is a bona fide, old-time slot machine, with prizes that can be won by the lucky players. Stop by even if you’re not fishing!

Just outside headquarters is the Derby standings board, which can change every time a newly caught fish is weighed in. Alongside is the weigh in platform. This is a popular place to stop, especially if a "new" one is coming in. Check out those 300 pound halibut!
